Positive Ageing and Resilience Training

Positive Ageing and Resilience Training (PART) is a project designed to support older people to increase their resilience to the challenges that most people experience in later life (such as retirement, acquiring a health condition or disability, becoming a carer or even bereavement).

A major component of resilience are the psychological attitudes which help people to generate more positive emotional responses in the face of difficulties. It is not about denying or avoiding difficulties, but learning how to respond to them more positively and in a way that enables people to ‘move forward’.

The core offer of PART will be highly participative courses, which will help people to learn a range of important psychological skills. These will be drawn predominantly from Positive Ageing Theory, Positive Psychology, Mindfulness, and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.

The key elements of the programme are:-

  1. It is possible to change how you feel: ‘Thoughts are not facts’ – through mindfulness you become more aware of your thought processes and can review them critically
  2. Relish the good things in life: Savouring is the capacity to attend to and appreciate and enhance the positive experiences in life
  3. Cultivate positive emotions – They undo the effects of negativity and help you to flourish
  4. Increase a sense of gratitude – Overcome the ‘negativity bias’ by noticing what is positive in life.
  5. Develop your strengths – these are particular ways of behaving, thinking or feeling that we all have which grow resilience and wellbeing and point to a positive direction
  6. Maximise an optimistic outlook – optimism is fundamental to resilience, and it can be learned
  7. Connect with others – Other people matter and relationships are a leading factor in resilence and wellbeing
  8. Find a sense of purpose – People who know what their life purpose is live longer, better lives.

This is an ‘asset-based’ approach which, amongst other things addresses ageist attitudes and promotes a strong sense of purpose in later life.

The project will be delivered through a mixture of:-

  • 2 x eight week face to face courses in Bristol,
  • 2 x two day workshops, one in Cardiff and one in London
  • A webinar available to anyone across the country.

The target audience are a mixture of people over 50 made up of people approaching retirement, people already experiencing a difficult life transition (eg. bereavement or becoming a carer) and older people from a mix of inner-city backgrounds.

The courses are FREE and are being delivered by Guy Robertson of Positive Ageing Associates & Miriam Akhtar of Positive Psychology Training. The project is part of a national pilot commissioned by the Gulbenkian Foundation as part of their Transitions in Later Life programme.

  • Thursdays from 28th April at the Vassall Centre in Bristol
  • A 2-day weekend workshop – Saturday 21st & Sunday 22nd May in Cardiff.
  • Another 8-week course in Bristol running on Tuesday afternoons from 20th September
  • A 4-week webinar course open to any older person in the UK running on Wednesday evenings from 6th October
